Deaththirst, The Sword of Azrai

Deaththirst is the name of the infamous black sword featured in the novel Greatheart by the author Dixie Lee McKeone.
Created by the mysterious forces of Chaos and Shadow, it is described as a huge, black sword covered with strange runes carved deep into its blade. It was wielded by the first Beast Champion of Azrai in Cerilia.   This powerful enchanted black blade is a demon from the Lower Planes that takes on the form of a sword, and as such is an agent of Chaos and Destruction. Deaththirst's edge is capable of cutting through virtually any material not protected by potent sorcery, and it can drink the soul from (and thereby kill) an unprotected human upon delivering any wound, even a scratch. Its most distinctive features are that it has a mind and will of its own, and that it feeds upon the souls of those it kills.
Deaththirst's hunger for power and corruption is such that it can frequently betray its wielder turning his hands on friends. Deaththirst has a "nemesis" sword named Starfire, which was at one time wielded by Prince Eyrmin of Sieldwood. During the last recorded sighting of the sword Lord Count and Thane of Talinie Edrand Roos finds the runeblade , in the realm of Limbo and at that time commences his battle with himself. In time Edrand returns to Talinie after a long journey and confronts the Northern Imperial Temple of Haelyn and its current Patriarch Lady Thuriene Donnals, who ruled the land.
Ultimately, Edrand’s reliance on Deaththirst proves his undoing: after his victory over the Clergy of Haelyn and the purging of the fanatics, just as it seems that balance has been restored to the realm of Talinie, Deaththirst kills Edrand, and “escorts” the soul of the human to the seven hells to be judged.
